У нас тоже тесты. Мы не форсируем события, используем консервативный подход, готовим новинки к 3-й серии тестов. :bigwink:

The real winner on F1 testing day two

Daniel Ricciardo set the pace at Barcelona on Friday, but SCOTT MITCHELL crunches the long-run numbers and explains where the real winner was on the timesheets

Leaderboards lie. Trust them at the end of the season, but at this stage they are not to be believed.

Even amid the smoke and mirrors of pre-season testing, it might seem churlish to discount the team that topped the times and the driver who clocked the most laps. After all, aren't they two of the most sought after gains from testing?

But dig a bit deeper and you can discard the timesheet from the second day at Barcelona. Red Bull was not the winner.

Pacesetter Ricciardo outscored every other driver in terms of laps completed, but Red Bull did not rack up the most mileage. That was achieved by Mercedes, thanks to the race simulation completed by Lewis Hamilton in the afternoon allied to Nico Rosberg's work in the morning.

And while Ricciardo's test-topping 1m24.574s on the soft-compound Pirellis was the best lap of the day, Hamilton's fifth-fastest time was far more impressive.

That the Australian only outpaced the hard-tyred Mercedes by 0.3s shows how misleading a headline time can be. And Ricciardo is aware there is work to be done.

"Obviously I'm happy with the amount of laps we did today, but in terms of performance I'm aware we can still definitely improve a few things," he admitted. "There's more to find."

Given the performance advantage Mercedes enjoyed last year, Ricciardo outpacing Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, the Williams of Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez in the old Force India collectively by little more than a tenth is nothing to write home about.

Mercedes being just three-tenths back on the hard tyre is ominous. And the race simulation completed by Hamilton in comparison to Ricciardo's? Another matter entirely.

First, let's take Ricciardo's 18-lap run on the medium tyre. It was the second stint in his race simulation, spent mostly in the 1m31s with a best lap of 1m30.645s.

At the same time, Hamilton was completing a 22-lap stint on the hard tyre. His outlap was 0.6s faster than Ricciardo managed all run.

The Mercedes driver dipped twice into the 1m29s bracket (with a best time of 1m29.391s) and was generally quicker for most of it.

Of course, there are variables at play. We don't know the exact condition of the tyres but, it being a race simulation, new rubber is a fair assumption.

The red flag caused by Carlos Sainz's spinning Toro Rosso will have hit Ricciardo's next stint hard because it occurred two laps after the Red Bull had pitted for a fresher set of mediums. But the pattern holds as the run gets longer.

It was after that red flag that Hamilton underlined the potential of the new Mercedes. During that 21-lap stint he managed 14 laps in the 1m29s, four in the 1m28s and a 1m30s before slowing down prior to his inlap.

Ricciardo resumed his run a little later, but again on mediums. And it was solid, but slower than Hamilton's; a near 50-50 split between 1m29s and 1m30s. The pace dropped when he pitted again for fresh tyres but the stint was also a lot shorter.

And then came Hamilton's flier towards the end. It was far beyond anything the Red Bull, Ferrari or Williams looked capable of on mediums. Not that Hamilton would not be drawn on any potential advantage.

"We've not spoken about where we stand compared to the others, we're just focusing on our own job and just making sure that we find any creases and we iron them out and get lots of mileage on the car to prove everything," he said.

"The first test is just lots and lots of laps, and today was lots of laps, so I'm not really dialing the car into how I would like to perfect it. But it feels good. It feels very similar to last year, but better.

"I definitely think that we're going to be in a position to fight the others. I've not looked at where we are, but I think others have taken a good step so I guess time will tell."

It's all the more significant for Mercedes that it delivered a warning shot on day two after an opening day that suggested a perfect storm was gathering to destabilise the dominant force of 2014 at a crucial time. And when Hamilton, whose first day ended after 11 laps due to a fever, spoke afterwards, he was clearly still not feeling 100 per cent.

Despite that, this was the strongest hint we've seen of the W06's real performance so far. While its rivals have not shown their hands, the Mercedes was so impressive today that it becomes the benchmark in all but laptime (and even then it's not far off at all).

You won't hear that from Mercedes yet, though.

"It's clear that the others have really stepped up their game," said Rosberg. "The lap times are surprising to us, and in relation, it seems Ferrari have made the biggest step at the moment."

But does he think the rival threat is real? "Yes. Our eyes are wide open at the moment."

Quite where the pretenders stand remains up in the air. Williams remains the real unknown quantity at this stage simply because it ran a programme focused on evaluating tyres across stints of varying lengths.

Clearly its one-lap pace is encouraging, as Massa's late soft-tyre run showed. But the Williams long-run performance remains unclear.

While Massa did complete two long runs, neither was a race stint. These two runs, just in excess of 20 laps, were completed less than half an hour apart. And they suggested the Williams is ahead of Red Bull as well.

Both runs were carried out on Pirelli's special 'winter' hard tyres, and compared favorably to Ricciardo when he was on the mediums.

The differing compounds make like-for-like comparisons even more difficult than usual in testing, but it was a positive day for Williams.

Raikkonen, on the other hand, admitted Ferrari was frustrated it didn't properly add to its morning tally until late on in the afternoon session. This has been billed as Ferrari's acid test; the way of knowing whether its Jerez-topping pace was a flash in the pan or a statement of intent.

Ferrari itself wanted answers, and today was an obstacle to that thanks to the need to replace engine components nearing the end of their life. And with the team not planning to perform race simulations until the final test next week, where Ferrari stands becomes even more difficult to gauge.

But its one-lap pace remains encouraging, with Raikkonen matching Ricciardo on the soft tyre despite the team believing it was carrying more fuel than the Red Bull.

Greater running is also crucial to establishing where McLaren-Honda will slot into the pecking order when it gets its house in order.

Fernando Alonso amassed the renewed partnership's most encouraging lap tally of testing to date, but it was achieved through a number of small runs.

"It has been a beautiful day for me - driving the car and exploring some of the potential," said Alonso.

"Definitely we had a better day today - we could complete some runs and we started running at 9 o'clock and finish at 5:45, which is good news, finally."

The Spaniard, though, knows McLaren needed to do to get its car to the official end of the day, and how that tally of 59 laps was reached: the longest he was on track for was seven laps, and that includes leaving and entering the pits.

The replacement MGU-K seal could define the second test for McLaren - problems fading and potential shining through, or the latest technical setback in a race against time for Melbourne? For all the positives, doubt remains. It's the same with Ferrari and Red Bull.

Was it as clear-cut as the timing screens suggested? Of course not, because you only need a small window of performance to nail a lap in testing.

If you're only three-tenths quicker on softs than someone on hards, you do not have the fastest car.

That's why there was only one real winner from the second day, and it's the team that ended it fifth.
