- Все довольно позитивно. Всегда понятно чего он хочет. Так как он выиграл чемпионат команда ожидает что он поведет их. Я думаю, что Кими делает это наилучшим образом (в смысле выполняет роль лидера), похвалил Лопес

Kimi Räikkönen hasn't lost one bit of his speed during his rally-odysseia away from F1-racing. Räikkönen made a real PR-stunt to his Lotus-team when he started the winter testing by making the day's top-time with the new E20-car.

Lotus-team's owner Gerard Lopez also had a wide smile when Räikkönen went to the top of the result sheet.

What has Kimi's impact on the team been?

– Very positive. It's very clear to us what he wants. Since he has won the championship the team is following him and expecting him to lead them. I think that Kimi leads them in the best way, Lopez praised to Turun Sanomat.

When testing day ended the media people filled the Lotus-premises. 80 reporters and camera-men wanted to record the topman's thoughts and being. And that was like gold to the business-wise Lopez.

Kimi Räikkönen drove with Pirelli's racing tyres for the first time on Tuesday and put in shame the claims that he would need a long time to get used to them. Räikkönen loaded immediately to a 1.20,5 -level during his first laps and improved from that to the time 1.19,670 on lap 28, which took him to the top of the result sheet.

The result topped last year's toptime in Jerez winter testing by 0,162 seconds.

Then how surprised was Räikkönen himself when the top-result was written down in his name?

– It gave a pretty ok-feeling. It's difficult to say what the others did. And it doesn't matter which positions you have in testresults but it doesn't harm either. It felt good, Räikkönen said to Turun Sanomat.

Räikkönen adapted at once to Pirelli's this year's tyres. Mark Arnall said that it didn't come as any surprise. It would have been a surprise if Kimi wouldn't had got used to them at once.

– I did drive with the demo-tyres beforehand. They were different so at least they didn't get any worse. The cars haven't change much from the time I was here. Now they have different tyres but when I drove with the worse ones, these new ones felt immediately better, Räikkönen said.

How different did the new E20-car feel with the actual race-tyres?

– It changed a little bit. These are better than those I wore on Monday and before that in Valencia.

Kimi Räikkönen's Lotus-car was a long time in the pit during the opening day of Jerez winter testing, because there was something wrong with the KERS-battery and the team had to both change it and make a thorough investigation on top of that.

– There was some small problem with the battery but nothing big. Aside from that nothing got loose from the car and nothing else like that happened. We meant to drive a bit more but we had to go to the garage and lost driving time, Räikkönen said.

Then what about you topping last year's toptime in Jerez at once?

– The teams have more and more experience year by year and different tyres. I don't know anything about the weather. And I'm not interested at all in what someone did a year ago. It doesn't mean anything this year, Räikkönen said.

Kimi Räikkönen is 32. On Tuesday the star from Lotus did something that was stunning at least in a Finnish way - and the international interest also hit the roof at once.

Who would have expected that Räikkönen would whip the Lotus to the first place in the opening tests? From what I have heard the top time didn't at least come with any minimal amount of fuel.

Of course one has to keep his feet on the ground. I doubt Lotus-Renault can challenge for the victories but you can't just shrug your shoulders to Räikkönen's top time.

When the day ended my reporter buddy Michael Schmidt reminded me that Nick Heidfeld took at once the top time in Jerez with Renault but was kicked out in the middle of the season. Rubens Barrichello also had to stop his F1-career.

No good examples so to say....

Let's take a different approach to the matter. As an old reporter I like to talk to the older men's federation. But now I wanted to talk to the younger generation about Kimi.

I walked around the paddock and instead of asking reporters I asked drivers how they reacted to Kimi's top time.

Is Kimi in their eyes just a veteran that came back or is he still a racing driver at his best?

The first one I bumped into was Romain Grosjean. How did it feel to see Kimi the first day in the car and immediately set the top time?

– Well you know him. Kimi is a WDC. It doesn't take a long time from a guy like that to master things. Kimi is definitely good for the team. The car went well. Kimi drove well. I'm sure that we can work well together and take the Lotus-car as high in the grid as possible.

What does a top time like this mean to you?

– Really good. It's better to be first than last although we don't yet know what the others are doing. But it's better to have it like this than in a reverse order.

The sympathetic Daniel Ricciardo had to leave Toro Rosso's testing day earlier when there was some problem in the system. He did register Räikkönen's time closely.

– It's not any stunning surprise. Kimi is a WDC. When you win a title like that you have a special talent. Two years elsewhere doesn't mean that much. I didn't expect him to be this quick from the beginning though. When I saw him I expected that his best speed would come a little later. When you are a talented driver you can take the car to the top when you get the chance.

Does Ricciardo then think that Kimi is an elder driver?

– I think Kimi is still a real racing driver. It's too soon to draw any conclusions but I think that he will prove during the season that he is still a very fast fast racing driver.

Valtteri Bottas takes part in all tests and races as Williams-team's spare driver.

Are you surprised over Kimi's speed

– Not surprised. I didn't doubt at any stage that he wouldn't get into speed. Of course there are always question marks. Kimi got to drive a few days beforehand although he didn't drive this year's car. He got a good feeling from that.

– However Kimi has been active all the time, drove rally etc.

– Tests are tests, everybody have different programs. But if you compare the times to last year's times Kimi is quite good. They seem to have speed, Bottas thinks.

In Sauber's premises I met Sergio Perez who was waiting for his turn to drive with the new C31-car.

– Kimi's top time doesn't surprise actually. I knew he would get into speed as quickly as before. He is a very good driver. We don't know what is going on in Lotus. But Kimi is a fast driver and he will develop the speed quickly.

Old or young?

– There's no doubt about Kimi being a racing driver - as young and as hungry. He is good to drive for the championship, Perez assured.

Back to Toro Rosso. Debutant Jean-Eric Vergne also recognized Räikkönen's potential.

– From what I know Kimi is a fantastic racing driver. He has proved that before too. I think that Lotus might be a quick car but I don't know anything about these times yet. It's just the beginning stage of the winter tests. You don't know how much fuel others have and what tyres they are using. The first race will show where Kimi's team is going.

Old or young?

– Difficult to say, Vergne was silent.

Bruno Senna was finishing his lunch in William's tent. He gained his reputation from Britain's F3-serie in Raikkonen Robertson Racing -team.

– We all know Kimi's speed. It doesn't take anyone by surprise now either. Kimi found the rhythm with the old car in Valencia and is still using it to his advantage. We will see the real speed when the season starts in Melbourne.

Old or young?

– It's great to get to race against Kimi. Nothing else matters, Senna said.

Watching Kimi Raikkonen topping the timesheets on the first day of winter testing yesterday – a feat which greatly excited Heikki Kulta, the correspondent for Finland's Turun Sanomat, who told me that Raikkonen is "loving" being back and that his body language is noticeably upbeat - reminded me of something Jenson Button told us at the McLaren launch last week.

"What does Kimi's comeback show me?" Button said. "That you don’t leave the sport until you really think it’s time. The last three years we’ve had two world champions come back to Formula One.

"It shows you’ve really got to be ready to leave. We've got a great thing going on here [in F1]. We’re doing something we really love."

Official testing action for the 2012 season burst into life in Jerez on Tuesday, with every team except Marussia – and nine all-new cars in action for the first time – kicking off their campaigns.

Returning 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen was fastest all day.

“The lap times don’t matter today,” Lotus’ Finn insisted.

“I do have a good feeling, and that was not always the case in my career after the first day of testing,” he told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

“But I would rather be P1 at the end of the first race than at the end of the first test day,” smiled Raikkonen.

Lotus team boss Eric Boullier, however, is convinced Raikkonen’s speed is real – and his motivation intact – after two years away.

“Believe me, he is there.”

Lotus technical director James Allison agreed, saying, “You can tell Kimi is a class act.”

Like fellow top team Red Bull, the new McLaren also had a low-profile day, with Jenson Button just eighth quickest.

But he didn’t accuse Lotus and Raikkonen of showboating.

“Maybe he (Raikkonen) was running heavy,” said the 2009 world champion. “We maybe haven’t seen eye to eye a lot of the time when we’ve been racing, but he’s a very quick driver, a world champion.

“He’s obviously in a very competitive car, and whatever they did today – low fuel or whatever – it was still quick.”
