  1. 20.01.2009 Fernando ALONSO Nothing less than the title will do for Fernando Alonso this season. After a solid fitness programme over the winter, losing a few kilos to compensate for the extra weight of KERS, the Spaniard is ready to rumble. And if the new Renault R29 delivers what it promises, then he should indeed be among the three or four drivers fighting for the 2009 drivers’ crown... Q: Fernando, what is your first impression of the new car? Fernando Alonso: Well, I think like all the 2009 cars it is a little bit strange to look at. The rear and front wings are a little bit strange. But I'm happy. I like the car. Obviously it doesn't matter if it looks nice or not - it just has to be fast and this we will find out in three or four weeks. At the moment I'm happy with the car and with the work of the team. So far we are all optimistic. Q: Are you happier than at this point last year? FA: Yes, definitely happier. Much more happy this year and much more optimistic! Because I think the rule changes are a big opportunity, if we do a good job, to fight for the championship. Last year even with the standard electronics, with no traction control and all these things, we already knew that the cars that fought for the title in 2007 were good enough to fight for the championship in 2008, because they had an advantage that they had built over the years. This year is not like that anymore. Everybody is starting from zero and if we do a good job we can be up with them. This is what we hope at the moment - and that is our aim. Q: Are you confident that you can be one of the drivers fighting for the title this year? FA: Yes. At the moment I think Flavio (Briatore) and me and the whole team is really optimistic and I think there is only one target for us for this 2009 championship: winning the drivers’ championship and winning the constructors’ championship. Both championships are the target! Everybody is focused on this and all the results that we have from the wind tunnel, the engine dyno, everything is more optimistic than we expected. The results are better than we predicted - so everybody is quite motivated. But you never know. You need a few factors to be champion at the end of the year - but hopefully for the first race we will be able to fight for the podium - at least. Q: There are so many new things that there is the danger that somebody does a much better job than anybody else and finds a big advantage over the others... FA: It's a concern for everybody. I'm sure that every launch of every car has been looked at with much more scrutiny than in the past. Every time we see a new car we try to look and see if someone has something completely different, or another philosophy or understanding of the 2009 rules. But so far I think we have not seen anything special and I'm sure you agree with this. None of the cars have anything that the others don't have - so maybe it can be a good championship. It's really open and there is a high possibility that more than two teams will be winning races. Q: How far did your negotiations with Honda go and how surprised were you about their exit? FA: I was surprised. The negotiations were not too intense because I was in a really good moment with Renault when I spoke with them. In fact I was convinced 99.9 percent that I would stay at Renault. And I was surprised when Honda said bye bye. You can expect that from a small team - maybe Force India or Toro Rosso - but not a big manufacturer like Honda. It was a surprise and sad news as well because Honda has been in F1 for so many years. But to be honest after Honda left the teams agreed many more things in one month than in the past three or four years. They are very concerned now about the costs and F1 seems more united - so the bad made the good! Q: With the new regulations, how much more difficult do you think it will be for Lewis Hamilton to retain his title than when you won your back-to-back championships? FA: Maybe it is more difficult because all the cars are mixed as we all start from zero. And if you carry the same regulations for two or three years it is very unlikely that the cars that win championships will lose their advantage, as they can keep this advantage probably for years. So it is easier to win back-to-back championships when the regulations stay the same. But if a team discovers something different, maybe they can win three or four races in a row and the championship becomes much easier after that. If that is the case with McLaren it can be easier for Lewis because he can have an advantage in one part of the season. So you never know. I think we need to wait and see. Q: Do you think he has more or less pressure as world champion? FA: I guess it is less. To be honest when you win the championship you will be Formula One world champion forever and you can enjoy racing more. You can make a mistake in one race and you know the championship is very long. When you are waiting for your first championship there is a little bit more stress because you don't want to lose the opportunity. Once you have the championship I think there is less pressure. Q: Renault were struggling last year with a lack of power, but the team has been allowed to make minor changes to the engine for 2009. Are you confident that you will now be level with the other front-running teams? FA: I hope so. We have been able to unfreeze the engine a little bit, because we knew last year we were down on power. This year at the moment we don't know. Hopefully we are at the same level as everybody - and hopefully better! Q: How nervous are you about the risks of KERS? FA: I know that there is a possible danger, but I don’t think too much about it. I'm not a great fan of KERS so far because all the teams have had problems with it. I know it is quite expensive and with the economic situation we have now, maybe it was not the perfect time to introduce KERS. But nevertheless we need to develop a system that is safe enough for mechanics and drivers - and that is good enough to finish the race with no problems. We cannot have any retirements from KERS, otherwise it will be a drama. And we have to develop this system in the five tests we have now in the winter. Because after that it is done! There is no testing anymore during the season, so it's not an easy job. But for now we don’t have any problems. Q: Do you think you have more of an advantage over your team mate now because of your experience - given that there is no testing during the season? FA: I don't think it changes too much for any driver or for any team. The only thing that will change compared to previous seasons is the winter testing. Now if you don't have everything under control in the last tests of the winter there's no time anymore to do anything. If KERS is still not working in the last test it is better if you remove KERS and don't race with it. You cannot arrive on Friday in Malaysia or Bahrain and think of a new solution for KERS. It's too late. That is the only change I see in terms of testing regulations. Q: What is your thought on Bernie Ecclestone’s medal idea? FA: I have no strong opinion on that. For us it is the same. I am used to the points and I see points as a little easier to understand for the spectators. Maybe points are good enough. Q: Flavio said that he seldom agreed with Ron Dennis but that he respects him. What are your feelings about Dennis stepping down as team principal of McLaren? FA: Well, I think we are not best friends, but I think there is respect for each other. He has been in Formula One so many years with a successful team and it is not easy to have all this pressure and stay at the top. We didn't have a perfect end to our relationship but we know how much he has done for Formula One. When I was young I remember McLaren and I had great respect for him. There are not many people like Ron in Formula One anymore. Now you have new teams, rich people that come and buy into F1 - or manufacturers. Ron did it like in the old days: one guy developing and growing up with the team, making a Formula One team successful and winning championships. I wish him the best for his new life. Q: How important will the Friday be at Grands Prix this season, given the ban on testing during the season? FA: I am worried that we don’t run too much on Fridays. Anything that you need to test on Friday seems to be more of a panic move because Fridays are just to check the car, check that everything works and to finalize your set-up. I don’t think that Friday will become a testing day and with the rule for the engines my guess is only very few laps on Friday. Q: How much weight did you have to lose to compensate for the extra weight of KERS? FA: Something - no Christmas this year! Q: There has been long standing speculation about your future with Ferrari. Do you see your long-term F1 future away from Renault? FA: I have been answering this question for four or five years. Hopefully this year I can be more relaxed about this question and if we are winning races and if we are fighting for the championship maybe we forget about Ferrari. That's my aim, because I'm really concentrated on 2009. I am more motivated than ever and more prepared than ever: physically and mentally. With all these changes I'm really looking forward to sitting in the car. And when we talk about 2010, or вЂ11 or ’12, is really a difficult question to answer. I'm not looking that far ahead. Q: So what is the target for 2009? FA: One target: winning the championship. If we don’t win the championship, this would be a disappointment. Obviously if after three or four races you are nowhere then you have to change your targets, but now in January you have to be really, really optimistic - and we are now. 26.03.2009 Fernando ALONSO Renault’s Fernando Alonso has arrived in Melbourne very upbeat. His every move seems to show that he is ready to fight again, that he feels confident with his team and his new charge, and that he’s long since banished any thought of the grass being greener elsewhere. Here Alonso considers the new regulations, the French team’s adoption of KERS and the excitement of finally getting the season underway… Q: How are you feeling about the 2009 season? Fernando Alonso: I feel very good, and I think we will have a very interesting season ahead of us. We have many changes in the regulations and all of us are looking forward to the race on Sunday. We are curious how competitive we are, because after the winter testing it is very difficult to say where we stand. But we will know very soon. Q: Do you have your eye on any of the competitors in particular? FA: Well, one thing is for sure, we don’t underestimate anyone. There are so many options at the moment, so the championship seems to me very open, which makes it very exciting for us. Q: Some people have said that the championship could be decided by the diffuser issue. What is your opinion on that? FA: No, I do not think so. Maybe the first couple of races some teams have an advantage, for example Brawn GP, as they have a different interpretation of the rules, so they might have an advantage there. But after the decision has been made, at least after a couple of races the other cars will be adapted and then they are on the same level again. Q: The season is starting amid some controversial issues - the diffuser debate, the points system and the financial situation... FA: Unfortunately we have had to face a bad last couple of weeks for the sport. There was the change of rules, the attempt to change the point system and now the diffuser issue. For the fans it is impossible to understand what is going on and how Formula One can start a season with so many doubts and changes to last season. We have to settle all of these issues and then we can enjoy the races, have fun in the cars and the spectators can enjoy as well. Over the last 50 years Formula One has been the greatest sport, and the last three championships were decided in the last race with only one or two points difference, or even in the last corner of the last race. So in my opinion we should not be too desperate to find more show for the spectators, as we have enough. We should rather focus on having some continuity. Q: What is your feeling on this year’s world championship? Do you feel that you have a car and a team capable of taking it? FA: I hope so. We are very optimistic, and our target remains the same as when we launched the car in Portimao. We want to fight for the championship, and at the end of the season we want to become world champion. We know it will be very difficult, and we know it's Formula One. The team showed last year how capable they are to improve the car in a short period of time, and we finished in a very strong position. If this year’s position at the beginning of the season is stronger than last year, and we are capable of scoring some points right away, we will be capable of developing the car to maximize its performance and its reliability. This would put us into the position to fight for the world championship. Q: What is the biggest regulation change for you this season? FA: For sure it’s KERS for a driver. It keeps me very busy in the cockpit - sometimes too busy! Q: Do you see it as an advantage, or disadvantage? FA: The KERS device is still something that is unpredictable, as it will be the first time that we will use it in a race situation, as for now we have only used it at testing. In terms of lap time, we do not expect much gain, as you lose a little bit of time in the corners, and gain some on the straights. So in the end you will be almost the same. In testing the difference between KERS and non-KERS cars was not huge in terms of performance and overtaking, so this race will be the first direct test to see the difference. This weekend we will find out if KERS helps in direct fights with a competitor. We chose to use it, and now we prefer to have it, rather than not having it on board. Q: Did you have to lose weight to use KERS? FA:This is not something you are forced to do, but the device itself is quite heavy. The ballast we had last year, which we were able to move to set up the car, has now nearly disappeared. The team is searching for a couple of hundred grams here and there, all through the winter to save two kilograms of weight. For me there would be no reason to lose too much weight in favour of saving weight. Q: What is your opinion on finding the right points system for Formula One racing? FA: I think that FOTA has brought a list of proposals, after considering the opinion of the fans, that are very clear and clever. We all agree that the world champion has to have something more than he has now. We have to find a common direction on that topic. Q: McLaren doubt they will be very competitive at the first couple of races. Do you think that in the end this could be too much to fight for the championship? FA: First of all we have to see how competitive they are. If they are able to score some points in the first race, then I think they are strong enough to fight for the championship. If not, then we will see how the car develops after they introduce some new parts. We all think that McLaren is able to fight for the championship soon, as they have the resources to develop a car very quickly, whereas other teams would need much more time. Q: Certain tracks suit certain drivers. You have an incredible record here in Melbourne. Why? FA: Because it is the first race of the championship - and that is very exciting. One of my strong points is consistency and not making too many mistakes. In Melbourne not many cars finish the race, so it is important to finish, and if you do, you’re very likely in the front.
  2. 17.10.2008 Fernando ALONSO He may not be a championship contender, but Fernando Alonso has already made his mark on the decisive final stage of the season, with wins in Singapore and Fuji that made the title challengers look pale by comparison. After admitting he would be happy to help Felipe Massa to the crown, only Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix will reveal whether the Spaniard and his Renault are able to tip the balance. But after going second fastest in second practice, it appears they just might... Q: Fernando, seeing you in the first corner it appears that the car goes really well on this track. You’ve been the quickest there. What is your impression? Fernando Alonso: Yes, the car felt pretty good but we had some issues with the tyres - like everybody else - so we have to analyze the situation and work on some set-up changes tonight. Otherwise it felt good and I have been able to do quite a lot of laps that gave us some good information. So we see tomorrow if we can translate our findings of today into performance tomorrow. Q: You say tyre issues - does that mean with both types of tyres? FA: I’ve done almost similar times with both types so there was not a big difference and tomorrow morning in the practice we will again do a tyre test to make the optimal selection for the qualifying. Q: Analyzing all the data coming from the car is one thing, but in the end it comes down to basic engineering, like the suspension and aerodynamics... FA: Well the data is very important, but they have to be evaluated and this happens at a race weekend overnight, rather then instantly. The next morning we will get the results and maximize the suspension and the aerodynamic setup with these data. Q: We are in the final stage of the championship. You have been in such a situation a few times before, so you are familiar with tensing up for the big showdown. How can you avoid such a state and keep cool? FA: Well, this is nothing unique to Formula One - you have it in every sport and everybody in such a situation has his own unique approach to manage the stress. But that’s part of the game. Q: When you said yesterday that you would help Felipe win the championship, was that a sort of sweet revenge for last season? FA: I prefer to see a Ferrari win than a McLaren coming from last year no doubt. What I find surprising is that such a notion had such a repercussion everywhere. When I see a tennis match I prefer one player over the other, the same goes for a soccer match. And when I see a fight between a Ferrari and a McLaren I prefer the Ferrari to win and I don’t understand all that hype about it. Q: That might well be true when being a spectator at a tennis or soccer match, as you are not able to interfere. But being one of the drivers on the grid you might be able to act in favour of one or the other... FA: Well, I think here it will be difficult to help in any way as the Ferraris and Mclaren are very quick and they will be in front of everybody else so it will be entirely up to them to win the race. In Fuji and Singapore I was able to be in front on the grid so it was different. Here it will be different, so I will watch the race like a spectator. Q: Do you think you will be fighting for the championship again next year? FA: I always said when asked when I will come back winning that I need another year. And I really believe that with whatever team I will be with next season that I will be able to fight for the championship. We will work very hard over the winter. I am pretty confident for that. Q: After your victories in Singapore and Fuji where do you see the Renault this weekend? Do you see yourself in front of BMW Sauber and Toyota here? FA: Other than in Singapore and Fuji I think that we are a little bit too far away from the front runners. In Singapore and Fuji we were four-tenths or half a second behind Ferrari and McLaren, here we are eight or nine-tenths away so this could mean that we are behind BMW. The race pace should be okay, but in qualifying I think that top six or seven is the realistic target. Q: Today the FIA requested tenders for a unified engine for 2010. What is your stance on all cars running on the same engine? FA: I think with unified engines and tyres it comes down more to the driver qualities, but I don’t think it is good for Formula One to be honest. We have big brands here in the paddock: Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Renault, Ferrari, and it would seem strange that we all race with the same engine. A Toyota car, a Renault car, a Mercedes car - this would no longer be Formula One.
  3. 1.09.2008 Fernando ALONSO Q: Fernando, you had to retire early from your second home Grand Prix in Valencia. You must have been extremely disappointed... Fernando Alonso: I knew that my weekend would be difficult after qualifying - starting so far down the field on a street circuit is never where you want to be. I was hit on the first lap and lost my rear wing. My mechanics did everything to try and get me back out, but my race was already compromised. I'm disappointed not to have been able to drive in front of my supporters as I wanted to give them a special race, but that's in the past now and I am looking forward to the race in Belgium. Q: As you say, this weekend is the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa. Is it a circuit that you enjoy? FA: Spa is one of those exceptional circuits on the Formula One calendar. Like all the older circuits, there is always a very special and warm atmosphere. For the drivers, Spa is an unbelievable challenge and is a very enjoyable place to drive a Formula One car. I have never won at Spa and hope that one day I can add a win here to my list of achievements. Q: What are the demands of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit? FA: It's a very long circuit, which generally emphasises the gaps between the cars. It requires a very complete car and so we will have to work hard on the set-up to make sure we are competitive in the quick sections as well as in the slower corners. The compression in Eau Rouge is still an impressive part of the circuit. Q: Do you think you can have a strong race in Spa as the team chases fourth position in the constructors' championship? FA: Even though the European Grand Prix turned out to be a race to forget, we should not lower our aims. I am sure that the team is giving 100 percent to achieve our objective and I will also give my maximum to try and get a strong result and score some points. At the beginning of the season things were not easy, but we have improved and we are determined to continue in this direction. 5.09.2008 Fernando ALONSO Q. Are you happy with today's result? Fernando Alonso: Yes, I am pleased as always when you are at the top of the timesheets. We know it is not important as it is only Friday but it provides good motivation for me, the team, the mechanics and everybody. So I am more happy than some other days. The work we did with the car, the set-up, etc, was also interesting. We follow the programme we had this morning and everything went well with some clear results - some positive and some negative. We need to analyse everything tonight and tomorrow hopefully start with the best car possible. Q. Are you expecting a stronger than normal weekend? FA: I don't think so. More or less, we will be in a similar situation compared to some other weekends. I think it is true that our normal position is a little bit unclear because sometimes we are eighth, sometimes we are seventh and sometimes we are 11th on the grid – so maybe this weekend is one of the good ones where we can be sixth or seventh. Obviously with Ferrari and McLaren there are four cars that are unbeatable, so you are fighting for fifth if you beat BMW Sauber and all these teams. So it is difficult to get something more than that. Q. Is this a circuit where the driver can still make a difference? FA: Obviously you have more chances to make a difference. It is true that circuits like Valencia, where it is only braking and accelerating, we all try to brake as late as possible and accelerate as soon as possible. When the car is good you can do it, but when the car is not good you cannot do it. Here in Spa there are some challenging corners where you need to play a little bit more with the racing line, the gearshift, with taking a bit more kerb or a bit less. The driver has something more to choose here in Spa than some other circuit. So obviously you can be a bit more important here. Q. How can you explain that on Friday you are top, but you are not expecting the same for the rest of the weekend? FA: I think it is unfortunately very clear. We ran with less fuel, probably, than the others – or I want to guess that. I cannot imagine that people, our competitors, they do not go as quick as they can on Friday. Everyone is trying the best on Fridays, but fuel loads are a big factor in F1 and our philosophy and strategy is to prepare the race and to prepare the qualifying as well. And, maybe some other teams they only prepare for the race. Q. Are you able to confirm that Renault are putting all their effort into next season's car? FA: I don't know. That is a better question for Flavio. I know that there is some work going on with the R29 for next year, but I think there is still some new parts coming for Monza with the R28. So it is not still 100 percent focused on next year, I think it is still 50/50. Q. Are you expecting rain for Sunday? FA: Not for Sunday. Our forecast is more optimistic for Sunday, with little chance of rain – no more than 20 percent. For tomorrow it is a bigger chance, like 50 percent, we have a clear possibility for rain. Q. How much more difficult is it to qualify with rain? FA: Very difficult I think. I don't remember many qualifyings in wet. We did Fuji, Shanghai I guess last year as well. And it is stressful because with this format you need to be on the track all the time because you never know if it is going to rain heavier at the end of that 15 minutes. Or if it doesn't rain the best lap will be the last lap. So you need to be on the track until the chequered flag. It is a very stressful hour, because you need to be on the track all the time improving the lap times – and we know Spa is dangerous in wet conditions. The white lines and kerbs are very slippery, and we saw this in GP2 and our practice. So a wet qualifying will be difficult for everybody. Q. How difficult is it for you to keep up your motivation now that you don't have such a competitive car? FA: You change your targets. We all want to win, we all want to fight for the championship but when you realise it is not possible you need to make a new target. For me now it is to help Renault finish in fourth in the constructors' championship, so my target from now until the end of the season is to beat Toyota. It doesn't matter if we are fifth or sixth, or 11th or 12th, we need to finish in front of them and hopefully in the points. That is the new motivation – you arrive to Monza, Spa, China, wherever, all weekend you are very, very focused because you want to reach your target. Q. It is only Friday but is seeing your name at the top of the timesheets a personal boost? FA: Yes, absolutely. It is only Friday and in Valencia I was P2 on Friday and I was out of Q3, so I don't know if it is a good start to the weekend! But Spa is also a special place. We all want to do well here in Spa and Monaco, these type of places, so the weekend has started very good and tomorrow is a much bigger challenge if we want to do well in qualifying.
  4. Интересно, что с теми интервью, которые я выкладывала раньше? 23.08.2008 Fernando ALONSO Q. You said on Thursday that Renault were now consistently top six to eight in qualifying and able to regularly challenge for points. What happened today? Fernando Alonso: Today we were not quick enough, and we didn't arrive to Q3, which is always our main goal, and target. We have been in Q3 for the past nine or ten races, and today we were out so unfortunately we were not quick enough. We need to do better next time, we need to be better than our competitors and we need to see what we can do for tomorrow. And obviously for the next Grand Prix we need to improve. Q. Why do you think the performance here has been lower than normal? FA: It has been closer than normal, because I was P12 in Q2 and I was six tenths from Sebastian Vettel, who had the best time. It is a little bit strange than in six tenths you are in first position or 12th position. It has been very close, one or two tenths can make the difference. Sometimes we were lucky in the past to be in Q3 for half a tenth, and today we were the one who was half a tenth slower. So we need to make sure that we don't arrive to that point that half a tenth makes the difference. We need to be clearly ahead of our competitors and we have not the pace today. Q. We have seen in GP2 practice and their race today that small incidents guarantee the need for a safety car or red flag. Will tomorrow be more about good luck with safety cars as about pure pace? FA: It can be! You never know. For sure there is a high chance of safety car at this track and we knew that before we came here - after seeing the F3 race one month ago. We saw today again, in GP2, the first lap and the first incident and there is a safety car. So tomorrow there is a high chance that we will have a safety car. If you can do something with the strategy or not is very difficult, because you need to know which lap exactly how to stop one lap before the safety car! And it is impossible to predict when there will be an accident, so you need to race with your fingers crossed tomorrow. Q. Were you organising the Spanish flag stickers on the helmets? FA: No. I was the one that was responsible to make the flags! But the decision came from the drivers' briefing. I don't know who raised the point, but at one point I found myself in charge of making 20 flags for tomorrow. So I just did that. Q. But you must be happy that all the drivers showed their respect yesterday and will wear the flags tomorrow? FA: Yes. It is a great sign of respect from all of us. We are all united about these things, and tomorrow will be a minute of silence tomorrow again with all the drivers at 1.48pm on the grid. I think I am very proud of this type of thing from my colleagues. Q. Can you say a word about Sebastian Vettel? Are you surprised about his performance? FA: Not really. We know the Red Bull is one of the quickest cars now, and they have the Ferrari engine – so obviously they have maybe an advantage there. We saw today, two exactly same cars, two Red Bulls and two Toro Rossos. One was in pole position and one was out of Q1 and Q2. I think Toro Rosso now is clearly in front of Red Bull after the last couple of races. Today, I think he did very well but also Sebastien Bourdais is in Q3 and fighting for good positions – so when the Toro Rosso is competitive we know that Sebastian will be in the top positions. It was a great performance, a great weekend and I think tomorrow they have a very high chance to score many points. It is another competitor that we have now.
