|Fernando Alonso to @MST_Formel1: "We only had very limited testing opportunities, it was very windy, that goes for everyone, but our car has changed a lot in terms of concept," the Spaniard reminds us that the team has not yet realised the full potential of the new car. "So I think we need a few races to stabilise things." "When I came to the factory at Christmas and in January, the expectations were very realistic," recalls Alonso. "We knew what kind of step we would take in the winter. But I think we have completely changed our philosophy on how we approach the championship, with a good starting position but then very steady progress throughout the season." "Last year, we gave everything at the start of the season and were then no longer able to react to the high pace of the top teams. We have more hopes for the second part of the championship this year. I am confident. I am happy." "So in Saudi Arabia, Aston Martin and Mercedes were a bit ahead of Ferrari, so we'll see if we and Mercedes will be better there," smiles Alonso.

We should stop to overrate the first race of the season so much, we were not as fast as the guys ahead yes, but also not as slow as the guys behind. If we listen to what Fallows and the team said they already thought that we won’t have that mega start as last year but it’s the whole season that counts. The pack behind Red Bull is very close the development fight will be very strong and it’s important to upgrade the car better than the others. It’s not so important where we start its more important where we end. 24 races is very long, and we still have a good car, faster than the guys behind but we loose a bit to the guys ahead. The car has a better base for successful upgrades and this will decide. We shouldn’t weigh the first race so much even if we would be on the podium today. Take Aston Martin and McLaren last year in Bahrain as an example. I have full trust in this team, all the engineers, the designers and all the other members.

Aston Martin are lacking data on their upgrade Aston Martin – like rivals Williams – brought a huge upgrade package to Canada and were hoping to clock a high amount of mileage to help them evaluate the new parts. However, Fernando Alonso said he couldn’t get a proper read on whether the upgrades were a step forward because of the lack of running. His team mate Lance Stroll, driving in front of his home fans, said he was happy with the car and reckoned it felt good – as they look to bounce back from a lacklustre race in Spain. Our data suggests their fourth overall in qualifying form, and third-best in terms of race pace, albeit some way off Red Bull and Ferrari. However, with rain forecast to fall constantly throughout Saturday, impacting both FP3 and qualifying, we could be in for a mixed-up grid and a fascinating race come Sunday.
